Queen Gertrude
Queen Gertrude is Hamlet’s mother, a widow,
and married to Claudius (Hamlet’s Uncle). Gertrude seems selfish, shallow, and
thinks only about her body and external pleasures. We see how she likes to use
fine clothes, sexuality and royalty. Hamlet is angry with his mother, because
she married her husband's brother. Hamlet resents his mother because he feels
she got over her husband's death far too quickly. Gertrude’s love for Claudius
seems genuinely but we do not know if she does it because she feels lonely or
because maybe marring Claudius made her feel safe. Hamlet and we as readers
also do not know if she knows that Claudius is a criminal. Gertrude cares more
about herself and her status than about her son and that makes her relationship
with Hamlet be unstable. We chose the song Boston by Augustana as an example of
what Hamlet feels towards Queen Gertrude (his mom).
